Families are an integration of a variety of characteristics and each branch of the family possess its own culture and characteristics. So planning a family reunion means finding the most common denominators of each branch that makes up the overall culture of your family. If your family members like socializing over a meal then plan your reunion around a feast. If your family has varied food tastes, make it a potluck so there will be something for everyone. If there is any special occasions in the family that coincides with the reunion, a fine dining celebration at a four- or five-star restaurant could be an unforgettable experience for the entire family.

If you have a family culture of independence and adventure, then a good family reunion for your family may be a camping trip. If you do decide on camping, make sure you study the wildlife and camping situation. It will help if the location is easily reachable to family members who are attending the family reunion. Several adventurous families who enjoy travel find road trips to be a stirring way to hold family reunions. Countless families find that going by convoy is a fine way to socialize and see the sights. And there are families that like themed reunions. It could be exciting to dress up in an era, particularly if your whole family tends towards something specific or has some links to the theme.

Think cautiously about how every family member fit in with your outcoming plans. Try to insert something to accommodate persons who may not fit with the plans as well. You should also consider the number of people coming to the event. For example, if you have about 40 people coming, a restaurant will not provide a good mingle experience. However, they would fit together well at a picnic or barbecue. Of course if you also have elderly people attending, you don’t go on a backpacking trip or tent camping. A road trip may work, but only if you have cars with amenities such as an RV with very comfortable seating and beds. You should also remember to plan social activities so as to gather others around the elderly as they may not be as able to pursue socialization and other activities that may absorb the younger generations.

Particularly in this mobile generation, families tend to be more spread out. If this is the case with your family also, it is so important to center the reunion on getting to know each other more better. The real enjoyment of the family reunions is in the stories shared, make time for these stories. If you do not know what typifies your family, ask other members. You could even make a survey and find what the most common answers are. Still if you are not sure, just do your best and try one that sounds good to you. Expectantly, you will get more chances to try other family reunion types in the upcoming days if it doesn't work the way you want it to work.
