Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which cancer cells are found on the outer lining of lungs, abdomen and chest cavity. The most common cause of mesothelioma is the exposure to asbestos. Asbestos has been used in construction companies for years. The fibrous particles released by the substance are harmful for the lungs and cause damage.

There are two types of mesothelioma depending on the area where cancer cells develop:

  1. Peritoneal mesothelioma: This is a type of cancer in which cancer cells are found on the outer lining of the abdomen. This is the lining protecting the abdomen and internal parts and also helps in creating a lubricating fluid which enables the organs to move and function properly. There are two components of the peritoneum in the body, the visceral peritoneum and the parietal peritoneum. Visceral peritoneum is the covering of the internal organs Parietal peritoneum is the covering of the abdomen cavity in the body.
  2. Pleura mesothelioma: Cancer cells found on the pleura causes this type of cancer. The outer lining of the internal chest wall and the lungs is called the pleura.

The symptoms of both types of mesothelioma are different but the symptoms start to appear 20 to 50 years after the exposure to asbestos. The symptoms of pleura mesothelioma will include:

  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue or anemia
  • Shortness of breath because of accumulation of fluid in the lungs
  • Wheezing
  • Persistent cough
  • Coughed up blood in the sputum

Most of these symptoms may be confused and linked with other less harmful diseases. If you have ever been exposed to asbestos in the past, you should seek a doctor in case you are complaining of any of these symptoms.

It is important to remember that it is not compulsory to be exposed to asbestos. A person who washes the clothes of a worker who is working in the asbestos industry is also likely to be affected with pleura mesothelioma.

Diagnosing pleura mesothelioma is difficult. Biopsy is conducted to confirm the diagnosis. Sample tissues of the part where the cancer cells are located are taken and examined under a microscope. A thorascopy is done when cancer cells have attacked the chest. The surgeon makes a cut through the chest and inserts an instrument called a thorascope. A thorascope is a small, thin tube which sometimes has a camera fitted which will allow the doctor to see inside the chest.

A full-fledged procedure for treating pleura mesothelioma has still not been developed. Doctors are trying to develop a treatment that will be able to completely remove the cancer cells from the body. Treatments involving the use of a needle to drain out the accumulated fluid from the chest and abdomen are also being tried. In general, treatment options for mesothelioma include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. The treatment will be decided on the basis of the size of the cancer cells, location and the extent to which they have spread. The chances of survival of people with pleura mesothelioma are very less.
