Although cysts are usual among women that are in the childbearing age, menopausal women should not be having cysts. Cysts are usually the result of cyclical reproductive functions. If this condition occurs, it should be checked by a gynecologist to do series of examinations to diagnose it properly and to assure that this is not a cancerous cyst.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to abdominal pain, alteration in bladder operation, constipation, bloating and back pain. If these symptoms are present, check with a health professional. Sores before menopause can clear up within a few months during ovulation cycle. During the reproductive cycle, the ovary will return to normal as the fluids will drain off. If the condition has not cleared up, surgery is the best option.

Hormones can be given to encourage dissolving during the cyclical function, thus eliminating the option of surgery. However, if hormones will not work, surgery is the last option?

A sonogram is used to view the size and shape of the cyst on ovary after menopause. A blood test can be done to determine the presence of cancerous cells and determining what approach to take in the treatment of this condition.

Even though ovarian cysts are common during child bearing years, a cyst found after that may pose a greater risk to cancer. Women ages 50-70 are more at risk of developing cancer than young women.  Usually, ovarian cysts that are found during child bearing years can be benign.

It is important for menopausal women to be aware of the symptoms concerning ovarian cysts. If cancer is detected earlier, there is a greater chance of surviving the disease. That is why it is significant to contact your gynecologist as soon as possible. Some doctors choose surgery after menopause to reduce ovarian cancer risks in menopausal women. A small incision in the abdomen is done to remove the cyst easily, this is called laparoscopy.

Removal of ovaries during menopause poses no longer a risk since there are no parts left in the ovary. Older women must always be aware of the symptoms of this condition and consult their gynecologist at once, to have a greater chance of survival.
