Risk of Prostate Cancer are Related to Early Balding

On February 15 Tuesday, according to the study showing that men who start to go bald at 20 may be more likely to develop prostate cancer in later life. This sign of symptoms may require an early screening or preventive therapy, as a scientist said.

Compared to the healthy group, a man ages 30-40 who started going bald there was no difference in their risk of developing prostate cancer.

French researchers compared 388 men being treated for prostate cancer with 28s1 healthy men and found that those with the disease were twice as likely as the healthy men to have started losing their hair when they were 20.

According to Philippe Giraud of Paris Descartes University, who led the study "At present there is no hard evidence to show any benefit from screening the general population for prostate cancer. We need a way of identifying those men who are at high risk."

"Balding at the age of 20 may be one of these easily identifiable risk factors and more work needs to be done now to confirm this," Giraud said in a statement.

This study of Giraud was published in the cancer journal Annals of Oncology. From this finding, the men who identified with higher risk of prostate cancer could be selected for earlier screening, or need to undergo an anti-androgenic drug (a chemo-prevention therapy) like Merck's Proscar, or finasteride. This drug of choice is a synthetic antiandrogen that blocks the conversion of testosterone to an androgen hormone or also called a dihydrotestosterone, and finasteride is used to treat both baldness and prostate enlargement symptoms.

From September 2004, the study and research begin. It involved a questionnaire administered to consecutive prostate cancer patients seen in three French radiation oncology units; questions included personal and family prostate cancer history. At age 20, the men were also asked to identify their balding pattern. Using the sets of pictures showing four stages of hair loss– no balding (or stage I), a receding hairline around the temples (stage II), a round bald patch at the top of the head (stage III), or a combination of both types of hair loss (stage IV).

In development and growth of prostate cancer, a man who linked between baldness and androgenic hormones, and androgens has a higher role to establish. The study of risk of prostate cancer according to their men's doctors it runs into 28 months, and be provided as a patients' medical histories, including any diagnosis of prostate cancer, age at diagnosis, stage of the disease and treatment.
