3 Tips on getting a new job

Posted: Dec 03, 2009 |

Before running out and getting another job, take a moment to identify your skills, interests and the things you want to learn. Really knowing who you are and what you are good at makes finding and interview for work that you want that much easier. Most people have a vague idea of who they are and what they are good at doing. No one thinks about things like that till they need to find a job and then panic sets in.

Today’s job market is extremely competitive and those who don’t know how to compete will end up lost. To stand out to potential employers you need to know how to express who you are and why you are the perfect candidate.

Identify your skills

First thing's first. You should identify your skills. Think of this as your key to getting the job and you should be able to express these skills verbally, the best you can.  Most people have a rough idea of their skills and even fewer can verbalize them. Don’t be afraid to brag, this is your time to shine and identify who you are and what you are good at. This can help not only you but potential employers where and how you could fit in the company. This is the time to make yourself shine by pointing out what you are good at and how you can apply these skills to a job.

Identify your interests

Next, is to know what types of things interest you. By following what you have interests in brings out an excitement that people around you can see and feel. The work you do has a real meaning to you. People like to hire and work with people who show real interest for what they do. You will have less stress and fewer crappy days. Challenges will be welcomed and your energy will be high.

Identify what you want to learn

Lastly, what new challenges do you want to conquer? It doesn’t have to be difficult. It could be learning how to work on a different type of engine or computer software. Maybe teaching adults instead of kids. If you have experience that you want to build on is there something more that would enhance and improve what you already know?

The key to finding and keeping any job is to explain in clear words what makes you a valuable asset to any company.
