A Career Becoming an Electrician

Posted: Feb 11, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

An electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, stationary machines and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure. Electricians may also specialize in wiring ships, airplanes and other mobile platforms.

"Electrician" and "electrical contractor" are related, though sometimes confused terms. An electrician is an individual tradesperson; an electrical contractor is a business person or firm that employs electricians to help design, install, and maintain electrical systems.

There are now numerous employment opportunities for people who want to learn how to become an electrician. This is because electricity is now one of the major things that power society. Electricity is no longer just needed to provide light. It is also needed for air conditioning, refrigeration and equipment and machine operation. If there are no individuals who want to know how to become an electrician, there would be no modern society as we know it.

You cannot learn how to become an electrician in just one long course or study program. A good electrician knows that nothing in the field ever stays exactly the same. This means that you have to actively look for opportunities to enroll in training classes that can educate you on new trends and developments. You can enroll on your own or ask your boss for opportunities for further training.

Without electricians, there would be no lights, no computers, and no TVs plugged into our walls. Electricians bring us electricity by installing the wires that carry electricity through houses, offices, and factories. They also fix electric machines.

Electricians start by reading maps called blueprints that show how electricity flows. Blueprints show where to put wires, electrical equipment, and outlets for plugs. When working on a new building, electricians draw new blueprints.

Then, electricians put tubes or pipes inside the walls. They pull wires through the tubes to connect the boxes and make a path for the electricity to follow. A path for electricity is called a circuit.

Electricians also add circuit breakers, transformers, and other equipment to control how electricity flows. They make sure the right amount of electricity goes to the machines that use it. Electricians follow strict rules about how to wire buildings.
