A Look At The Houston Community College System

The Houston Community College System is made up of seven community colleges within the Houston, Texas area working together to make sure that every student attending the college is given the tools that they needs to succeed.

The colleges work collaboratively to design curricula that meet the needs of the diverse population of students who attend. The entrance standards for the colleges are very lenient so that students who may have difficulty in an area are able to take courses to help them reach the college academic level they need in order to attain their certification or degree.

There are many different types of education taught through the Houston Community College System. Individuals can attend the distance learning program and receive college credits towards their degree. There are ESL classes for students who may need to become more proficient with the English language to be successful. Adults wishing to complete high school will find classes available to meet this objective and prepare them to proceed through the Community College System.

A simple questionnaire walks every individual wishing to attend Houston Community College System through a set of questions that helps them to recognize their major interest. Students find that they may be interested in a field that they had not thought about before. One of the parts of the questionnaire asks the individual if the education is for immediate entry into the workforce or if it for higher education. Upon making a selection the individual is walked through the steps to establish a plan for meeting their objectives.

For students wishing to use their education to enter the workforce immediately the college has designed programs that meet those needs. These job training programs offer students courses that provide them with college credit as well as job training. For many students this unique programs gives them an opportunity before committing to decide that they want to do something differently.

Knowing the difficulty that high school students often have making the transition from high school to college, the HCCS has developed programs specifically for these students. Students receive training in what to expect from their college experience, and how to complete college level assignments. They are provided advisors who assist them with any educational resources they may need.

The Ongoing Education Program offers workshops and classes which are geared towards individuals who are working or changing careers. The classes for focused on the specific needs of the students and encourage students to pursue further academic goals when they have completed the program.

There are several scholarships available for the students of HCCS through the community college system and private sponsors. These scholarships are available to students who are residents of Texas as well as students who may be coming to Texas specifically to attend school.
