Alternative Nursing - What Are Your Options?

Posted: Feb 04, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

The job of nurses is no longer confined to emergency rooms, or hospital wards. There are many jobs that nurses can now turn to if they find their present jobs monotonous. The first alternative is to become an online or telephone consultant. Thanks to the Internet, and computers it is now possible for people to get assistance from qualified medical professional for their health problems.

People can now contact a helpline financed by the US government to get a rough idea about what they might be suffering with. This, of course, is exclusively for minor ailments. There are several programs and websites available on Internet that enable people to diagnose their problem without approaching any medical facility. These sites are not written or developed by amateurs.

Instead, qualified medical professionals or nurses are around to help people reach right conclusions about their health. They can also be contacted over telephone. Many of these medical consultants who counsel people on their health related issues, have considerable experience as medical practitioners.

Such jobs are a nice alternative to those in the usual hospital environment. In this type of consultancy, there is a limited level of contact with the patients, but it can be extended if mutually desired. The medical practitioner spends more time in diagnosing the symptoms, and medically treating the ailment rather than being part of hectic hospital routine. Becoming a travel nurse is another form of alternative nursing. There are agencies that employ nurses for freelance nursing. Such nurses are referred to as travel nurses, or locum nurses.

These nurses are then sent to different medical facilities as per the needs of such facilities. Travel nurses are paid well because at present health care industry is grappling with acute shortage of nurses. Such freelancing type of job also helps these nurses in getting familiar with different medical facilities that have different equipment and way of doing things.

This adds faster to the knowledge and experience of these nurses. Travel nurses can continue to be in touch with their patient at such facilities if they want to. More people are now turning towards alternative therapies such as herbal treatment, and reflexology.

These open new doors for nurses looking for alternative nursing career. Almost all such therapies require nurses for taking care of their patients, as well as implementing the therapy. Such treatments are given in an environment that is considerably different from the regular hospital.

Some of these treatments are traditional treatments. Nevertheless, there are patients who have found some merits in such treatments. Nutrition is one way to escape hectic nursing duties, and yet be in touch with your patients. There is a great demand for nutritionists in the Western countries.

This is because there are many diet related problems in this part of the world, including chronic obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, kidney problems, and eating disorders such as anorexia, and bulimia. It is necessary to change diets to control or reduce such problems.

This means nurses can look forward to becoming nutritionists as an alternative to their hospital jobs. Occupational nursing is an alternative that has been around for many years. Large business houses employ a few nurses, especially if there is a likelihood of their employee being injured.

In any such event, nurses have to give the required guidance so that the injury is not aggravated and the patient does not suffer much. This is also a specialist job, and nurses can earn well in such jobs.
