Are you very secured, well protected, well cared, safe and also happy with the above in your organization, beware, you are nothing but a ‘potted plant'. ‘Potted plant employees' are not that good for the organization.
What is the real meaning of potted plant employees? The plants kept in the pot will get water, manure, care and attention. All these things are provided on time and the plants need not work for it. Potted plants are also well guarded and well nursed. Security and protection enjoyed by the potted plants are far greater when compared to their counter parts in wild.
Some employees are like potted plants. Inadvertently, they move into such growth pattern. The security, the meager benefits, timely monthly salary and other perks always make them a prisoner of such environment. The potted plants has very limited growth, not encountered the world beyond the pot, nor faced any threat. The employees feel that such career to be the best. They never know their capability nor wanted to know that. Only essence they find for their life is security and not challenge.
It is not the organization that makes its employees ‘potted plants'. The mind set of the employees that contribute to the best. The reasons may be justifiable or not. They cannot even imagine a life beyond the industry. The personal growth, growth in their career, value addition, increase in the remuneration, nothing attract them. Interestingly, such people may not be loyal also. It is the fear that drive them not the feeling of loyalty. Such people may be very capable too. Many difficult projects they would have completed. They may have excellent work skill as well.
Will such people add value to the organization? The HR need to do a deep dissection of the people across the organization to understand their work style and thinking pattern. But sometime the people in the HR might wish to be like a potted plant and hence only god can save such organization.
Many organizations love to have potted plants as their expectations or demands are very minimal. In the changing tide of time, every industry must face many challenges and win over them. The question is, will the potted plants have the knowledge, exposure, strength or capability to meet such challenges. Do they have the sensitivity to understand the ever changing market dynamics? Do they know how to deal with a change? The people who resist change even in their mind, how will help the organization to move forward. When the competition is high, they may shift their area of harvest like how ‘shift cultivation' was practiced in ancient days. Entrepreneurs must know the danger of potted plants in their organization. Some time the entrepreneur himself/herself may also be living like a potted plant as far as their expansion plans of the organization is concerned.
