Career In Sales - Move on or stay put in your current job?

Posted: Aug 21, 2009 |

Working in sales can be one of the most exhilarating and rewarding career paths to go down.  For those that love to see a direct correlation between effort, skills, persistence and your rewards it really can be one of the most fulfilling ways to build a career you can be proud of.

However, there will come a time when you will be wondering whether you are in the right role and may consider checking out the jobs market to see what sales jobs are out there on offer.  Before you take the plunge and look for a new job, you have to consider if you’ve just had a bad day at the office, or you really are looking for a new line of work in sales.  So how should you go about deciding whether it is time to move on or not?

Firstly, don’t rush into anything.  A snap decision today could leave you in a difficult position tomorrow so take the time to rationally go through your situation.  There are lots of sales jobs out there, but take the time to write a list of all the pros and cons of your current job.  Start with the obvious such as pay and location, but don’t be afraid to include “softer” aspects such as having good professional relationships with your team, good parking or even a good local pub you like to unwind in.  All of these factors add up to your total work experience.  Try and be as honest and objective as possible, no one else has to see your list so there is no reason not to be totally honest about your situation.  Doing this alone will help de-clutter your mind and will probably make you more able to put your situation into perspective.  Sometimes there might not even be a logical reason why you do or do not like your current job; all of us do not act completely rationally all of the time.  There are times when the “perfect” sales job on paper just doesn’t fit with you for whatever reason.  You are more likely to succeed with the sales and get the commissions if you really believe in what you do or have a passion for the products you sell, because if you don’t, then why should your customers feel any different?

If you are in two minds about whether to move on or not, speaking to a recruitment consultant may really be able to help you.  Professional sales recruitment companies like UK based CDSR are there to offer you help and guidance in your sales career as well as placing candidates in some of the best sales jobs around.  Speaking to an experienced sales recruitment consultant can help you understand your own skills and attributes better and enable you to better understand if your sales skills could be utilised better for a different company.  The key things to remember are to consider your long term ambitions, and to work out if your current job fits into these plans, whatever your goals are in life.
