Chipola College accepts applications from incoming freshman from everywhere but primarily serves Jackson, Washington, Holmes, Calhoun, and Liberty Counties in the Florida Panhandle. The Florida Panhandle enjoys all of the benefits of the Florida climate but still has very distinct seasons, unlike most of the state. The main district that Chipola College serves borders on Alabama and Georgia but the school does have some students from other states, as well. Bordering on the states of Alabama and Georgia, the school offers students an abundance of activities off campus but not too far away. With a diverse student population, Chipola College is always reaching to become better. With students from age 17 to 24 being the largest portion of the population, there are students of all ages and from every walk of life attending Chipola. Due to the nature of the school being a predominantly commuter college, Chipola holds class between 8 am and 2 pm daily, Monday through Friday with course offerings available in the evenings, as well. The school came into existence in 1947, being a private institution due to laws in the state of Florida. However, the next year, the Minimum Foundation Law was introduced and passed. This new law enabled communities and counties in the state of Florida to give financial support to colleges, allowing them to become public universities and colleges. The original building stood on the grounds of the Marianna Army Air Base from 1947 until 1953. The following school year, the school began operating in it's current location. Chipola College was known as Chipola Junior College until 2003. In 2003, the school changed it's academic standard and began offering bachelors degrees in the fields of Science and Math. Chipola College is still a springboard for many of it's students. These students opt to get associate's degrees from the school and continue on to get their bachelor's degree elsewhere.
