Cyber Networking and Your Job Search

Cyber Networking

Now, many jobseekers seek out employment opportunities online. The Internet is the farthest-reaching network you'll ever encounter. It has an abundance of networking opportunities. We've identified some vital tips to help you utilize the vast online network. Whether it’s you or your direct reports, attendance at a new media conference will provide insight and best practices. You may meet some centers of influence that can help you with your job search, or, even a hiring manager! Being visible also gives you the opportunity to find out more about other companies to see if there is a good match.

  1. Identify your career industry. Conduct an Internet search to locate a forum of your peers. Sign-up, register, and involve yourself. Contribute your expertise via the chat-rooms and forums. Become a recognized expert. Answer peer questions and inquiries. Soon you will have established your reputation and developed relationships. These relationships are a new network that can help to improve your search engine ranking. Be sure to use one name consistently.
  2. Break the ice. Introduce yourself to other online users. When registering your "profile" be certain to include information pertinent to your industry. This allows other interested networkers to identify and interact with you while browsing profiles. Offer to answer questions as they relate to your field of expertise.
  3. Join mailing lists. Many social and professional networking associations maintain mailing lists to deliver information to its members. These emails may contain information about upcoming events, mixers, conventions, and business meetings where you can meet and interact with other members.
  4. Beef up your email signature. With technology playing an integral part of our lives today, you will be conducting a fair amount of your job search through electronic and online arenas. Use your email signature as another opportunity to sell yourself.

For example:

5. Create a Blog. Creating a blog is a great way to network amongst your peers. It is a great way to demonstrate your knowledge of a particular topic and to connect with others who share your interest. However, a blog is only valuable if you commit to posting regularly (at least once a week). If you decide to use your blog as a source of information for hiring managers, you should include a link to your blog in your email signature.

Be sure to network purposefully. Whether online or offline, make sure that you have a consistent message when communicating to strategic relationships or unadvertised leads. Rely on your specialization statement as an introduction elevator statement and then go into greater details when prompted.

As you build relationships and networks, know that these people will become ‘career insurance’ at the worst. Should a job or career fall short and you need to make a change, then these individuals will help you to get your next position
