Filing Unemployment

If you've been laid off from your previous job, did you know you might be eligible to file your unemployment claim online? Filing for unemployment online means you won't even need to visit the unemployment office at all.

Many US states now allow applicants to file for unemployment benefits either over the phone or by using the online application forms. Not only can you claim your benefits this way, but you can also log into the Unemployment Services website to check and see how your current claim is progressing.

Before you begin filing for unemployment you should take some time to prepare your application. You will need some of the following information available:

- your personal information

- your address and phone number

- your driver's license number

- your last employer's details

- accurate dates of when you started and finished your last employment

- how much income you earned in your last employment

- a pay slip to verify your income information

- your social security number

- your mother's maiden name

The amount of unemployment compensation you receive is based on the amount you verify as being your previous income and calculated accordingly. Because you are receiving money, the tax office regards your unemployment benefits as being taxable income. This means you can elect to have the unemployment office withhold tax payments from your benefits.

If you choose not to have tax installments taken out of your benefits, then you have that option, but you should be aware of your tax obligations when it comes time to file your tax return.

The unemployment office will ask you why you left your last employment. The answer they're looking for is that you are unemployed through no fault of your own. However don't think you're not eligible for unemployment payments if you quit. You may just need a little more assistance with filing your unemployment application so you get it right.

The sad truth about filing for unemployment is that many applicants don't receive the full amount of benefits they may be entitled to. Even worse, their application may be rejected completely if they've filled out the application information incorrectly.

Unfortunately you could also be penalized or have your claim declined if you provide too much information. It sounds a little bit backwards, but it is important to balance the amount of information you provide in your unemployment application.

If you're still unsure how to go about filing unemployment, you can always learn more about it using our complete guide and system. We can help you every step of the way and help you to claim the maximum amount of unemployment benefits you're entitled to.
