Although freelancing is getting increasingly popular in Singapore, it is doubtful that freelancing can be a mode of living or the primary career option for our workforce.
The pace and standard of living in Singapore is not suited to freelancing. Between the increasing number of ERP gentry, the rising transportation fees and higher GST, it is hard enough for Singaporeans to live with a full-time job. Living as a freelancer will be doubly harder.
I believe that there are many reasons why many people adopt freelancing into their current lifestyle. Some students might take up a freelance and part time job to support themselves. Housewives might want to try something different and start working from home. Some people might have just taken up a freelance job to fill up their time.
Whatever the reason, I stand by my belief that freelancing is not a feasible lifestyle in Singapore right now.
Even so, I think that this might change as time goes. Freelancing allows people to work from home and I would think that many family-oriented Singaporeans would rather work from home where they can be with their family. Many would rather work at their own pace and have time for their children rather than having a 9-5 job that takes you away from your family at least 5 days a week.
The possibility of freelancing being a new lifestyle in Singapore in the future is high as with the use of online and mobile technology, in certain situations, there is no need for the employee to be physically present in the office at standard working hours. Journalists can submit their articles online. Graphic designers can receive instructions through emails and let their client view the end results without having to leave the comfort of their homes. If we look at the largest dedicated freelance marketplace in Singapore, it was started since July 2008, have attracted more than thousands of freelancers and employers within the first 3 months in Singapore. This figure does indicate the changes, where people start to see freelancing as one of the primary options in getting casual income, side earnings and outsourcing .
Simply said, freelance is not a practical career choice in Singapore right now but when time to come, it is a possible mode of lifestyle in the future.
