<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->A career in medicine can be exciting and rewarding but also challenging. In order to become a doctor or more specifically a General Practitioner (GP) it requires 9-10 years training.
Entry requirements for undergraduate degrees are set by the individual medical schools but all students are expected to have good GCSE grades in the core subjects such as English, Sciences and Mathematics. A Level results will need to be very good, for example Imperial College London will typically demand that you achieve AAAB grades in order to apply. The A Level subjects preferred will normally be Chemistry, Biology and preferably another science based subject or Mathematics.
Some universities will accept two AS Levels to include Chemistry instead of one A Level.
There are also a growing number of postgraduate places at universities to enable those who have already got a degree to study medicine, this training will normally span over four years as opposed to the traditional six as an undergraduate.
The process of training to be a General Practitioner usually takes the form of 4/5 years at undergraduate level, these training programmes are flexible and will vary depending on the particular medical school. This course is then followed by a two year Foundation programme. This is designed to help bridge the gap between medical school and specialist general practice training that follows.
The aim is to provide trainee doctors with grounding in practical medicine and clinical skills and includes placements across a broad spectrum of areas such as accident and emergency, anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology. Other key skills required to become a GP will include communication, research, team working and leadership amongst others. Doctors who have chosen the job of General Practitioner will require training for a further three years in order to obtain their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). These three years take the form of a Speciality Training Programme for General Practice and is necessary for trainee GP's to obtain competencies required to practice safely and competently in general practice. At least one of these three years will need to be working as a GP Registrar, the other two will be spent in hospital posts training in a number of specialities that could include fields such as psychiatry, geriatrics, palliative medicine, cardiology and paediatrics.
On completion of all the necessary training and assessment you will be able to apply for a GP Certification. According to NHS Careers salaried General Practitioners can expect to earn anything between £53,781 and £81,158 dependent on, amongst other factors, length of service and experience.
