How To Grow Your Lawn Care Business

Posted: Jan 28, 2011 |

In the  United States alone, small businesses spend more than twenty billion dollars annually in local advertising. A big chunk of that is spent on advertising in the yellow pages.

Even though things are starting to change,a great many lawn care services have never advertised their services beyond the typical handing out of brochures and listing their company in the phone book. By not focusing beyond these two advertising methods, they are potentially missing out on a ton of business.

Specialization can be very profitable. While all lawn care service companies advertise their services as a whole, many of them fail to advertise specific parts of their service. For example, if you specialize in organic lawn care, advertising that you use organic fertilizer can easily grow into a full blown service of its own.

Tree trimming and stump removal services are addition examples of auxiliary services that many full service lawn care companies provide which could easily stand on its own. You may be surprised at just how much your business can grow by simply taking one or more of the services that your company already provides and offering it as a standalone service to homeowners and businesses who are interested.

Amazingly, in this Internet age, it is amazing and baffling to realize that so many business owners have no presence on the web. Today, local search is more important than ever. Many customers, when looking for a lawn care company, use the Internet as their first resource instead of the yellow pages as they did in year's past. And the cost is miniscule compared to the business you may potentially get.

It isn't necessary for your first website to be the best of its kind ever created. In fact, in the beginning, all that you really need for your website is a one-page brochure. And, it does not even have to do that much. All it has to do is to list the services you perform, your contact information, and a call to action. You can have this done by a web designer or student for much less than $100 total. A domain name will cost you under $10. And hosting fees for a one page web site will run you anywhere from $1.00 to $10.00 a month. Your total first year cost is $230 at most. If  your website gets you only one new customer that year, it has paid off.

When it comes to advertising, most business people are limited in their imagination. But, there are many ways to advertise your business. What many lawn care companies fail to do it to develop a business and marketing plan aimed at getting them more business.

Many people undervalue a sales and marketing plan. But it is valuable because it forces you to laser focus on what is the most important to your business - marketing. Without a business and advertising plan, your company will never grow to its potential. Instead, like most businesses, it may simply wither and fade away.

I've spent a lot of time learning about advertising on the radio. I understand ROI as well as MER (Media Efficiency Ratio). I understand the point of 30 minute long form ads versus :30 second spots and prime placement versus remnant space. These are all radio terms that help businesses get good at advertising on the radio.
