Whether you are employed or unemployed, seeking to transition from one position to another, you need to efficiently and effectively execute your job search. Even if the market is tough and competition for jobs is intense, you CAN still find the position of your dreams – it just takes strategy, time, and dedication. In order to streamline your job search, here are some helpful hints to assist you in finding a great new position.
1. TARGET YOUR JOB SEARCH: Are you in dire need of a job, or just browsing? Are you bored, or desperate to find work. Once you find your motivation, the next thing to do is target your search. Start with the local sites, such as craigslist. Sure, craigslist is trolling with scams and crepoids, but many small-medium businesses still use it as a source to find new staff. Then expand to large sites such as Indeed, Monster and Ladders.
2.REVIEW YOUR RESUME– Make Personal Information Confidential: The world is a different place then it was even 5 years ago. As the market has tumbled, many people have lost their marbles. Unfortunately, there are several unscrupulous companies out there looking to steal and sell your information. Do NOT become a victim. The best thing to do is obtain a PO BOX as an address. If this is not an option, use the city and state. Do NOT put your HOME address on the resume. Also, if possible purchase a prepaid phone that you only use for the job search. If this is not an option – just use an email, and be SURE to create a specific email that you only use for the Job Search.
3. REVIEW THE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: If the job asks you to include a cover letter, than you'd better include one. If it says do NOT include a cover letter, than do not include one. You will not be earning "points" by adding a cover letter – you'll just be showing that you did not follow directions. This is not the best way to make a first impression.
4. MAKE SURE YOUR RESUME IS PERFECT: Nothing impresses a worse opinion on a potential employer than a crappy cover letter. If you cannot take the time to draft a 1-2 page effective document free of grammar errors and spelling errors, then what does that show? It shows you are sloppy and careless.
