New ways of Job Hunting

Posted: Nov 26, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

With realtime search becoming the recent buzz on the Internet, the job hunting process needs a little bit of rethinking.

To be on top of your game and to come across the jobs that you are looking for in your expertise area, you need to adjust your job searching methods.

Here are a few suggestions

1. Regularly search twitter for specific keywords in the area that you are interested in. If you come across a twitter handle that seems to be feeding useful information, you can do any of the following:

1.a. Add it to your Twitter list

1.b. Subscribe to the RSS feed of the Twitter account (e.g. using Google reader)

1.c. If the account has an associated web site and an emailing list, subscribe to that.

2. Facebook is also a good source for job hunting, as their are many groups and pages that are built for this purpose. Once you get the right profile, you can join a group or become a fan of a page. The other good thing about Facebook is that, you can ask your friends to get you information regarding a specific job and make use of the social-pyramid around all your friends and friends of friends. If, for instance, you and your friends have 50 friends each, a single status update from you requesting for information will reach 2500 contacts in just the first layer and 125000 in the second. All you need to do is ask your friends politely to send out the request to their friends.

3. You can also use Google Alerts to receive regular emails about pages that contain certain key words. You can configure the alert to send you messages once a day or as it happens, depending on your preference and frequency of email checking.

The good thing about all these steps, and other similar ones, is that once you are done with your job hunting you can remove the settings and stop all the noise. You can then pass the good word about your methods to friends and friends of friends and start your own word of mouth infection, as Malcolm Gladwell would put it :)

Happy Job Hunting
