A Nursing Aide Salary varies from state to state. California, and New York usually pay the highest, while Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana provide the lowest. The average salary is typically between $30,000 to $35,000. In Chicago, an Aide makes $32,755. In Houston, they only make $27,216. Then in Phoenix, the pay is up to $33,379. It will all depend on the state in which one lives. It will also depend on the sector the Aide is working in. Hospitals, private care, and nursing homes each pay a bit differently.

So, what does a Nursing Aide do? A Nursing Aides work under the supervision of a nursing and medical staff. They have a wide range of duties to perform. The Nursing Aides are the ones that the patient sees the most. As a result, close bonds are often formed. Duties they perform include: answering signal lights, taking blood pressure, serving food trays, transporting patients, changing linens, as well as bathing, dressing, and undressing patients.

Nursing Aides have a great employment outlook. Due to the increasing elderly population, employment of Nursing Aides is expected to grow faster than the average of all occupations through 2016. Also, increasing technological advances will have a positive impact on the demand for Nursing Aides. It will increase the need for long-term care that Aides can provide.


As for hours, most Nursing Aides work thirty-two to forty hours a week. Some work part-time, though. Since patient care is a twenty-four hour, three-hundred and sixty-five days a year business, schedules may vary a lot. Aides may be required to work days, evenings, weekends, or even holidays.

To start the job, individuals must complete a state-approved training program. The program has a seventy-five hour minimum requirement, sixteen of which are supervised clinical training hours. Once the program is completed, an individual is added on the state registry of Nursing Aides. Aides must complete twelve hours of continuing education, annually, to maintain their certification. Along with this, individuals should be in good health and have a clean criminal background.

It can sometimes be a grueling job, but it is worth it to help a patient. Complete the requirements and you can soon become a Nursing Aide. It is a worthy job, one that can provide a steady income. Then, with more education, will come advancements and a higher salary to go with it. Nursing Aides often go on to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Registered Nurses (RNs).
