Optometrist Career

Majority of students joining an optometry course must have a bachelor's degree. In order to be accepted in the program, at least three years of pre-optometric learning is required. Accredited optometry curriculum normally takes 4 years of study to finish. For admission in optometry school, you must pass the Optometry Admission Test.

This test determines the comprehension of science and also the academic capacity. This test is usually taken after the sophomore or junior year of the student. This provides them enough time if needed, to take again the examination for a higher result. Students must have to take courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, English before applying to the school. Other courses in business, psychology, sociology, history and speech are required also. Several students pick to finish science bachelor's degree due to the strong science practice given.

Courses may provide certificate and degree programs that will include basic optics, ophthalmic procedures, office procedures, anatomy, physiology of the eye, contact lenses and lens surfacing, English and English composition, and speaking. Business courses may also be required, such as accounting, finance, and administration. Additionally, students will study examination and diagnostic techniques, computer skills, and CPR.


Once you have graduated from a vocational Optometry and Ophthalmic Technician School, you will be qualified to take on responsibilities of customer service, adjusting and repairing frames, verifying prescriptions, obtaining patient histories, and maintaining patient charts. Additionally, technicians sometimes take on billing processes and correspondence, maintaining and ordering supplies, and scheduling appointments.

Doctor of optometry nature of work includes performing a test for any development of glaucoma along with other eye diseases at the same time diagnose for conditions brought about by systemic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. They also recommend medications to cure vision problems or any eye diseases. There are some who give pre and post operative instructions to patients with cataracts along with patients who had corrective laser surgery in the past. Optometrists, like other physicians, urges preventive measures by stimulating hygiene education and nutrition to patients so as to decrease the risk of any eye disease to occur.

While most doctors of optometry work as primarily a care optometrist, there are others that prefer to dedicate themselves in a particular field such as geriatrics, contact lenses, vision therapy or pediatrics. This leads to a rising number of doctors of optometry to form group practice wherein every member focuses on a certain field while remaining still a full scope on their own practice. Other optometrists became professors or instructors while others perform researches and even consultations.

Optometrist who wishes to conduct research or even teach will need to pursue a Master's degree or even a PhD in visual science, physiological optics or health education, just to name a few. Business ability and the ability to deal well with patients is an important key to success. Attention to detail and manual dexterity are also important qualities that all doctors of optometry must possess.
