Insurance Pre-certification Coordinator – ensures patient/physician office compliance with all pre-certification requirements for services and procedures. In this responsibility, you’ll also counsel patients on financial responsibility and provide them referral authorizations.
Medical Records Director –coordinates the medical records staff in file maintenance and spearheads the medical record compliance for releasing records.
Front Office Supervisor - directs the efforts of the front office-staff and also helps with scheduling, and staff training.
Medical Coder / Biller - submits claims, enters charges and payments, and appeals claims.
Billing and Coding Supervisor - directs the staff of medical coders and billers.
Patient Services Coordinator - instructs patients on lab services, x-rays, consultations with other physicians.
Medical Assistant - helps with triage care of patients for vitals, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and minor physician assisting for procedures.
As a matter of fact, most about medical coders start out in the front office of a medical practice. So, when you’re considering a career change from a receptionist to a medical coder, start up by attending local chapter meetings. It’ll help you to network with other coders and get some good advice on pursuing the profession. You should also ask your office if it provides any training for employees or if the office may help you pay for the coding classes.
Start with some basic coding and billing classes, and you’ll be able to decide for yourself whether or not coding will be a good fit for you. The cost for joining such a class is minor, considering the advantages it may have for your career.
