Responsibilities of a boiler engineer include operating, repairing and maintaining a boiler plant, machinery and the equipment. Some boiler engineer jobs require engineers to train other engineers and operators while some may require engineers to work closely with the business department to develop new products and define product specification based on market demand. In addition, they are required to maintain high-pressure industrial gas, supporting apparatus, and oil and solid fuel boilers. The majority of boiler engineer positions are at shopping malls, factories, commercial buildings, and warehouses.

Depending on the work place the responsibilities of boiler engineers may vary for instance some skills in operating expansion tanks, heating systems, electric boilers, compressors, motor, pumps, hot water tanks, and other mechanical and electrical equipment. They also maintain log books and keep records of fuel consumption, temperature, pressures, and routine operations around the plant.

There are several boiler engineer opportunities in the UK depending on the level of the boiler engineer license. Basically, there are three different licensing levels of boiler engineers first class, second class and third class. The highest level is the first-class license. First-class boiler engineers are referred to as the chief boiler engineers, and are in charge of a boiler plant with an unlimited steam capacity and you will also operate and supervise the boiler operation.

The level below the first-class is the second-class boiler engineer license. Second-class boiler engineers are permitted to operate a boiler plant with a 200,000 lb/hr steam generation capacity. However, they must have at least 2 years of experience as a third-class boiler engineer to qualify as a second-class boiler engineer.

The lowest level is the third-class boiler engineer license through which engineers are allowed to operate a boiler plant with a 100, 000 lb/hr steam generation capacity. To qualify for a third-class boiler engineer license, it is essential to have at least 2 years of experience as a boiler operator.
