Neurology is a very varied field in medicine. There are many different areas one can go into which go from muscular distrophy, neuroinfections, neuro-ophtalmology, pain management, neurocritical care, neural repair, movement disorders, epilepsy, behavioral, pediatric neurology, neuromuscular, general, military and stroke neurology.

It is a fact that every 45 seconds someone suffers a stroke in the US. One very rewarding and high growth area in neurology medicine is stroke neurology. With starting salaries of around $125,000 with excellent benefits and the opportunity to assist many suffering patients neurology jobs are a hot area in which certified neurologists can channel their skills. The settings are varied. You can work as part of a private practice, in hospitals, stroke units where patients get comprehensive treatment by different specialists or even go into medical research or teaching. They diagnose patients by conducting a neurological examination to look for symptoms and signs of strokes and also determine what type of stroke and the recovery prognosis of the affected person. They must know how to interpret the different medical tests administered to diagnose the type of stroke and its causes and prognosis, such as: CT Scans, MRIs, lumbar punctures, doppler ultrasounds, electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, angiographies, leg ultrasounds and blood tests. After the initial diagnosis, stroke neurologists oversee the rehabilitation and assess the improvent of the patient. In private practice, stroke neurologists work mainly with patients after they have been released from the hospital. This is usually a more intimate environment in which to treat patients in which the neurologist will work with the patient on rehabilitaion exercises and lowering risk factors to prevent future strokes and well as follow-up visits.

In stroke units, the stroke neurologist will oversee the care and work as part of a tight-knit group of different specialists brought together to bring a comprehensive, all-around treatment to the stroke patient. Research provides a very exciting career path. Here the stroke neurologist will conduct experiments on humans and animals to understand the inner workings of this disorder, discover and fine-tune surgical techniques to repair the brain damage caused by stroke, find ways to decrease the extent of the damage caused by strokes or find ways to prevent the stroke from happening in the first place and even work to create new medicines and other form of treatment to ameliorate the devastating effects of this condition. Another setting in which a stroke neurologist can practice is academia.

Teaching emerging doctors on the skills you have acquired so they can connect with and help more patients is a very rewarding aspect of stroke neurology. As you can see, this is a dynamic career of services greatly needed where you can expand your knowledge and skills from different angles allowing you to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and enriching the lives of so many people affected with this debilitating disease. You can also enjoy mobility and variation within this discipline.
