Targeted Job Search
The task of performing a job search for a solid career position is subject to change from month to month and year to year. As the economic climate improves, it becomes easier to find good career opportunities that would fit one's career objectives. During an ever improving economy the recruiting company may need to go out and proactively hunt for applicants, as a strong economy means that people have stable jobs and are earning respectable wages. In that kind of climate it can be very hard for companies to recruit successfully as well as retain the talent they have within their pool of employees.
The market that we find ourselves in today is not like that; in fact it is quite the opposite. The economy has slumped to the point where the onus is now firmly on the applicant to hunt down the job. For recruiting companies it is now like shooting fish in a barrel. All companies have to do is place an advert for a position and within hours they will have dozens, if not hundreds of applicants desperate to get themselves hired. And these are not your average applicants. This means that the job search market is full of high achievers and professional types all hungry to get back on their career ladder to continue the climb to career success.
With it being so hard to successfully get a job these days, it has become incredibly important to make sure that the job you are hunting for is a job that you will sincerely perform your best, and it is with a company that you will want to work for and represent in your specialized career arena. Ask yourself this - with it being so hard to get a job, is there any real point in landing yourself a job that you will hate and want to leave? Of course not, because then you will need to go through the whole recruitment process again. Taking a little time to get focused in your approach to job hunting will pay off massively in the mid to long term. Yes it may be easier for you to get a job with any company, but that can be a short sighted perspective. Better to take a little longer to land yourself a job that you actually want and with an employer you desire to work for.
So the question then becomes 'how do I go about locating these types of opportunities?' The answer is fairly simple, and easier than you might think!
Sit down and make yourself a list of all the companies that you want to work for, that you have a realistic chance of securing a job opportunity with. This list is going to be important to you. Think about the industry that you are interested in and then learn (if you don't know already) who the big players are in that industry. Look at the reputation that these companies have as employers, look at wage rates, business reputation, growth and expansion of the business and any company related news from the past couple of years. Take into account everything that is important to you; draw up a list of companies that you want to work for from this list based on the above mentioned research. This now will be the list of companies that you will contact and hopefully submit applications to when career opportunities become available.
In a sea of recruiting companies, this list will be like your lighthouse, always guiding you back towards what is truly important to you.
You need to discover where these companies advertise their open job positions. You should also be attempting to network your way into the organization to discover who the hiring managers are as well - then try to create a professional relationship with them, if possible. Often companies advertise on their own websites, but not always. Check the major online job boards as well as the niche recruitment sites for your chosen companies.
During your targeted job search do not be tempted to blindly send in your resume to the companies HR department. This would constitute a total waste of time as a letter addressed to no one will indeed be opened by no one. Get the name and contact details of the actual hiring manager, as this will be the person you most want to communicate your skills and level of interest in the position with! If at all possible you should contact this person and ask them if they would be receptive to you to sending in your resume - and sending it directly to their attention. From there, follow up in a professional manner until either you secured an interview or the position is closed.
Do this with every company on your list. Remember that there are thousands of people out there looking for work, and this kind of targeted job search takes time and effort. So do not waste your time with building relationships with people and companies you do not want to work for! Instead, focus on your chosen companies - the companies you researched and know will offer you the best possible career opportunity. That way you are more likely to secure a job that you would be happy to keep for a period time that fits your particular career aspirations.
