Similarly, flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) uses the same equipment as the GMAW except that it employs wire consisting of a steel electrode tube surrounding a powder fill material.  This cored wire is more expensive compared to the standard solid wire and generates extra shielding gas and/or slag, however, it permits higher welding speed and greater metal penetration. Submerged arc welding (SAW) is a high-productivity welding method in which the arc is struck beneath a covering layer of flux.  Because contaminants in the atmosphere are blocked by the flux, this process increases arc quality. Arc welding is a safe process when proper precautions and operating procedures are strictly followed.  Employing new technology and protection measures will greatly reduce its potential hazards. I can see from this article that the author read about arc welding from a poor source, but never has actually done arc welding themselves. To say that arc welding is popular because of "simplicity of equipment and operation", and "requires minimum operator training and inexpensive equipment, albeit slower weld times.", is a vast underestimation of the motor skills, intelligence and proficiency through practice and understanding of theory that make arc welding a science and an art. There are about a dozen factors that come into play when executing a quality weld with this process: weld position, joint fit-up, metal thickness, required weld size, amps, volts, type of alloy, length of cables, polarity, rod type and code, ability to set amps needed without an accurate amp dial, knowing arc-blow and how to remedy for it, correct rod angle, correct arc length and why, when to use a stringer and when to use a weave, how to handle rods, importance of ground location etc, etc, etc.
The article trivializes the skill sets of professional welders. X-ray quality welds are used in a extremely wide array of fields. Pipe welders are the alpha of the profession. Tell them that what they do requires minimum operator training; be ready to run.
I think this piece should state that the simplest of welds can be done with a minimum of training, but to attain superb skill is the result of years of practice built upon solid understanding of welding theory.

The way I see it the author just wanted to present the overview of arc welding. This is not to underestimate the welding process and its intricacies. And like me who's not in the know about this thing at least I am able to learn something. Oh well to each his own.
