The Explosion in Work at Home Customer Service Representative Jobs

Posted: Mar 15, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

In today's new economy, companies have been expanding their offerings of work at home based opportunities to job seekers. Most work of this type is on the administrative, non-revenue producing side of the company's business. The largest, and most commonly, outsourced portion of a company's business is that of the customer service representative, or order processor.

Companies' Reasons for Outsourcing

Most companies have decided to outsource their administrative services positions for several reasons. The most prevalent reason has been to lower its overall operating cost. Other reasons for the explosion of companies outsourcing jobs to home-based employees include the focusing on company's overall mission; to create a more efficient use of limited capital funds; or, to free up other internal resources. Whatever the company's motivates, it has allowed the stay at home mom, the freelancer worker, or the part-time job seeker, the opportunity to increase their income. More importantly, the companies are allowing these individuals to set their hours of operations, as most call centers are operating twenty-four hours a day 365 days a year.

Job Opportunity and Description

With the lowered cost of technology, specifically the cost of computers, telephones, and internet access, small and large companies alike are increasingly hiring, and allowing, current employees to work from home. The net result of these lowered cost has created, for the average individual, a rewarding and fulfilling employment opportunity while working from the comfort of their home. As long as the individual has the technical requirements of the employer available to them they should have no problem working from home.

The growth outlook for this employment sector is trending higher at a rate of 20% by the year 2018. The customer service representative's job description primarily consists of assisting incoming customer inquiries by way of telephone, email, fax, or regular mail. The customer service representative, working under the particular companies' guidelines, will respond to the customer's inquiry. Details may include resolving the complaint or concern of the customer; processing orders; or, routing the customer to the person within the company who is best able to address the customer's concerns. All of this done from the comfort of the home-based worker's home office.

Customer Service Representative Pay Scale

The United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics has reported the median pay for customer services representatives as $14.36 per hour. The pay scale for an customer service workers has been classified as:

  • Lowest 10% of workers are paid $9.15

  • Middle 50% of workers are paid $11.34 - $18.27

  • Highest 10% of workers are paid $23.24

These rates are quite competitive because the home-based worker does not have the customary expenses that are associated with working at the office. Even at the lowest rate of pay, $9.15 per hour, the at home worker does not incur the expenses of fuel, clothing, and other expenses as a result of working in an office everyday. The only negative is that the home-based worker does not have the daily socializing that comes from working in the office environment. Despite this drawback working from home is the trend of the future.

With the explosion of companies outsourcing their customer service and order processing centers the job seeker should research this available option. If you are looking for a home-based opportunity this should be strongly considered as it is flexible and rewarding.
