The Importance of Networking with Your Supervisors at Work

Hierarchy in all fields of activity is not a random thing. It practically divides the activity in a company and distributes the appropriate amount and type of work to each employee for a better task achievement.

As the type of activity may be, there are supervisors of up to five workers or of an entire department. These people must be reliable professionals, endowed with excellent social skills and able to co-ordinate the activity of their subordinating employees for the benefit of the business the company is doing.

A supervisor is someone who should know the answers to most questions that workers might have regarding their job and should be a good colleague too. There must be good cooperation within a team so that the final product is as expected and a supervisor can do a lot to ensure that by the way he or she does the supervising activity.

Employees expect guidance and support from their supervisors and a tense relationship may affect their work and implicitly the well-being of the company. That's why choosing the right supervisors is a very delicate thing to do and the manager must weigh things well before nominating the people who will link his office to the subordinated ones. According to the size of a firm, the hierarchic chain may include more ‘loops' and each of them must join efforts to create the best environment possible for the activity to develop.

A supervisor should not be considered a ‘bad wolf'. His or her job is to monitor the workers in a certain sector of a department and make sure that each and every one of them does exactly what he or she is supposed to do. A supervisor also acts as a spokesperson for the group he or she is in charge with and creates the link to the next stage of management in the company.

Good cooperation and understanding between the supervisor and the employees will reduce the amount of wasted time for each job that they are to complete. Clear specifications and kind assistance from a supervisor will enable the employees to work as they should and perform at the height of their qualification. Also, a pleasant atmosphere in a certain sector of activity will create the necessary conditions for the people to carry out their work according to the standards of the company.

A tense relationship between a supervisor and the employees may lead to conflicts which will affect not only the work in that very department, but also the overall activity of the firm. You must have heard of, if not experienced, the presence of those bullies in the office who do nothing but give orders and, instead of helping people work together and supervising their activity for their sake and that of the firm, they display a patronizing attitude towards them and sometimes make their lives a living hell. Such ‘little tyrants' are the worst type possible and a supervising position is not at all what they deserve.

Networking with a supervisor should be a pleasant everyday experience for both parts involved and ensure optimum work conditions and the achievement of the results that the management expects from the employees.
