Lacking the same physical abilities they had previously, a patient may get the recommendation of therapy from their doctor. Patients who experience less physical activity may have difficulty performing the regular activities of daily living. Limited range of motion may occur in limbs or other body parts affected by illness or injury. These physical disabilities can be helped by physical therapy assistants.

Physical therapy assistants go through a training program which teaches the different ways the body and its individual parts move. Anatomy and physiology are an important part of the program designed to teach various exercises capable of helping individuals with the physical problems they are experiencing. Physical therapy offers wonderful treatments to patients which will help them return a happy physical lifestyle.

Physicians recommend physical therapy to all patients they feel can benefit from the therapy. A physical therapist will assess each individual patient and determine a program involving various exercises and activities which can assist the patient overcome their physical handicaps. Physical therapy assistants follow the program designed by the therapist helping patients perform each exercise properly. Assistants in physical therapy will help individuals with the exercise initially if the patient is unable to complete the exercise on their own. As the patient progresses through the treatment and becomes stronger, the assistant will then monitor the patient's progress. Physical therapy assistants have the important responsibility of reporting patient conditions and progress to the physical therapist noting any changes, improvements, or setbacks the patient may have in order to keep the program on track providing the best help and highest quality of care for the patient.

Assistants are in charge of the majority of the direct patient care in the therapies. They have the benefit of getting to know their patients and assist with the exercises and activities recommended. Physical therapy assistants can perform the exercises on patients unable to do it themselves which will help to slow down the debilitation process. Patients who are in a comatose state can benefit from physical therapy assistants who provide exercise to their limbs which can keep the limbs from becoming victim to atrophy which is the medical term used for when muscles loose their physical properties making them useless.

There are many different careers in the health care field. As a physical therapy assistant an individual has the opportunity to get to know patients, helping them return to the physical condition they had prior to illness or injury. Exercises, observing progress and changes, and communicating with the therapist are only some of the responsibilities a physical therapy assistant will find themselves in charge of handling. This is the career path that individuals should choose if they desire employment in health care and possess the skills and abilities to help patients overcome their physical challenges.
