The Value of Public Speaking Today
They say that man's greatest fear is public speaking; his second greatest fear is dying. Imagine that – most people would rather be dead than stand and give a speech! But did you know that man's 3rd greatest fear is dying while public speaking?
No one has yet died on the podium to my knowledge. Certainly there have been heart attacks on stage while performing, but as far as the spoken word is concerned, no one has actually died while standing there. Your knees may be shaking, your voice may be quivering, your mouth may feel like the Sahara desert and you may have vomited before going on stage, but the good news is that it won't kill you!
How important is public speaking today? More than you may realize. In decades past, the only people who gave speeches were the CEOs or the presidents of companies or clubs to which our parents or grandparents belonged.
Today, everyone is speaking. From astronomers and administrative assistants to zoologists and Zontians, the number of people involved in some form of public speaking is innumerable; and, the ability to be a dynamic public speaker can make all the difference in just how successful you are in your business life and even your personal life as well.
Addressing an audience is a wonderful means of networking. It introduces you to new people who get to hear about you and/or your business without having to say it individually to each and every person in the room. In fact, public speaking can be your best tool for getting exposure very quickly, a huge bonus if you are looking for a good ‘KickStart' for your business.
How comfortable are you giving a speech or making a presentation? If your presentation skills need work, it is to your advantage to research the subject; but, more importantly, you will gain more knowledge and experience from the actual practice of public speaking. Join Toastmasters, enroll in a public speaking class, or attend a presentation skills workshop. What you will learn in these situations will be much more valuable than any words you read on the subject or CDs you listen to on your way to work!
If possible, record yourself when you are speaking, then study the recording, and make the necessary changes. Seeing yourself in action is one of the best tools available for learning and improving; however, having someone coach you on your strengths and weaknesses is the best way to hone your presentation skills.
Being able to deliver a dynamic presentation is a valuable asset that can have a tremendous impact on the success of your career. Don't allow your fear or your nervousness keep you from making that all important presentation or speech.

Some people who are normally colorful in conversation find their delivery skills lacking in expression. And then there are those who lack color both in conversation and at the lectern. There is no doubt that one of the quickest ways to put your audience to sleep is to speak in a monotone and talk at a rate of 100 mph with no acknowledgement of your audience. Does this sound familiar?
One of the reasons people contact me is because of lack of air at the podium, in the webinar, or in a sales presentation. So I have a question for you.
I am ever amazed at the number of people in public speaking who never give any consideration to their speaking voice. Concerned about their physical image, their content, and their delivery skills, they have yet to realize that the vehicle for transmitting their message is the voice. And, it is not the one they hear inside their head; it is the one they hear on their voicemail.
That's a leading question, isn't it? With teleseminars there is definitely no visual and with webinars, there may be a picture of you, but more than likely, your listeners will be focusing on the visuals; i.e. slides, videos, or webpages as well as the sound of your speaking voice. And, the sound of your speaking voice is what you are hearing through your headphones and not the familiar voice you hear in your head.
Teleseminars and webinars, do you know the difference? Teleseminars are held over the phone and do not require the internet; whereas, webinars are held over the internet. In the case of the latter, your participants may either listen by means of the phone or the computer; however, since webinars usually display video, slides, or a wegpage, your listeners will still need to use their computers to watch what is being presented.
