If you are contacting a prospective employer by post or email your covering letter is of paramount importance.

It is the only thing that with make the difference between your CV getting read or not and that is why it has to be of a very high standard indeed.

It is understood that most employers take about half a minute to read a covering letter and with the volume of mail and email that they receive these days for just one position it is easy to see why a covering letter that is clear, concise and above all short will get noticed.

There are basically six things to remember when writing your covering letter and these are.

  1. Be business like. Always say why you are writing and state the name of the position you are applying for.
  2. Never ever use a template, they tend to get noticed and then you have to ask yourself what would the person you are writing to think of your ethics.
  3. Type the letter, which these day's means using a computer and some word processing software and use the spell checker.
  4. Avoid silly mistakes. Check your letter and make sure there are no spelling errors, that you have given the person you are applying to the correct name and used the right address and salutation.
  5. Don't use colour or unusual fonts but even if you are emailing the letter print it out and take a look at it to make sure you are happy with it.
  6. Always be brief. Traditionally a business letter is only, yes only three paragraphs and if you can't write a business letter just practice and keep at it until you can.

The best thing to do when writing a covering letter is to remember your will be one of tens or even more and it should stand out for the right reasons not the wrong ones.
