Derrick's future looked really bright. He just graduated from Michigan State with a bachelor's degree in international business. He boasted a 3.8 GPA, as well as many other impressive academic achievements. He had a terrific resume, was intelligent and well spoken. The world was his oyster!
It was time to begin his job search. He posted his resume at online job search sites, got in touch with all his contacts that he made at Michigan State, and replied to newspaper ads. He went on several interviews, but for whatever reason, wasn't able to close the deal and get that job he was looking for and clearly deserved. He noticed he was being passed up by companies who then hired other, less-qualified people to fill the position. "What do they have that I don't?", Derrick often wondered out loud.
He wondered what he could do to improve his interview skills. Derrick was thinking back to questions that he was often asked, and he remembered one that he had a little trouble answering: "So, tell me a little about yourself!". It sounds like a simple question, but Derrick didn't quite know how to answer it. He usually told the interviewer that he enjoyed playing cards and hanging out with his friends, which seemed to turn off some of the employers. But what could he tell employers about himself that would impress them, other than what was on his resume?
Derrick was thinking about positive things he did in his spare time when it finally dawned on him - he could tell the interviewer about how he makes his own fuel from waste veggie oil. Anyone would have to be impressed upon hearing that he prevents heater homemade oil waste, and proposed a local law banning heater oil waste. Not only was he conserving the planet's natural resources, but he was saving a ton of money in the process!
Armed with his new secret weapon, Derrick headed off to his next interview - one for a job that he really wanted. When that question came up again - "Tell me a little about you personally Derrick", he confidently answered that he likes to jog a couple times a week to stay fit, and that he makes his own diesel fuel to help save the planet.
"Oh really, tell me a little more about the Veggie fuel", the interviewer asked him.
"A company named Green Machine has a formula that allows you to create diesel fuel in your own home using oil vegetable waste", he answered. "Not only does it save me thousands of dollars a year, but I am doing my part to help the environment by making sure there is no oil treatment waste or oil pump transfer waste!"
The employer was so impressed with Derrick for being so logical and helpful to our planet that he offered Derrick the job on the spot!
