A surgical technologist is a medical health professional who provides invaluable assistance to surgeons in every surgical operation. They also assist anesthesiologists in delivering the anesthesia, unpack surgical supplies for use by the surgical team, take notes during surgery, and ensure that the patient is comfortable and vital signs are normal after the patient is wheeled out of the operating room.
Surgical techs that are part of the core surgical team perform various tasks including passing and handling medications and tools, and operating the surgical equipments that monitor the vital signs of a patient. Certified surgical techs who are promoted to first or second assistant surgery technologists perform some minor tasks during surgery. This includes sponging blood, holding surgical tools and equipments in place for the surgeon, suctioning medical wounds as directed, dressing the wounds, and other tasks as directed.
After surgery,medical techs make sure that the operating room is once more clean and sterile for use. They organize the tools, medical equipment, and surgical instruments in their proper storage. They also restock the surgical supplies according to hospital rules.
