Instructional designing processes decide the best methods of instruction for bringing relevant changes in knowledge and skills for a particular content. Instructional design is an upcoming career option for writers and people with an interest in developing knowledge content. It is the practice of arranging media to enable teachers and learners to transfer knowledge to their students in the most effective manner.
Instructional design mainly revolves around determining the present state of understanding of a learner. It also defines the main aim of instruction and creates certain media based interventions to help in the transition. Pedagogically tested theories of learning are used to develop learning material. It helps to boost the learning process that may take place in student-only, teacher-led or a community based setting of education.
Cognitive and behavioral psychology forms the root of instructional design. This field of work involves the instructional system, which is an arrangement of resources and procedures to promote learning.
Instructional Design Process
Instructional design works in different steps - analyze, design and development. Professionals working in this field need to do a lot of analysis about each step they take while developing content. The content can be based on any topic according to client requirements. The first step involved in analyzing is to think about the goal. Instructional designers think of their end result before they start working on a project.
Writing an aim statement provides instructional designers with a clear picture about the whole process and leads to the desired result. They need to be very clear about what they wish to achieve. The following questions form the main part of every project. Make sure you get answers to these questions before formulating and writing the aim statement.
-What is the purpose of this project?
-How do you think this project will help students understand and learn better?
-What kind of challenges you think you will encounter and how do you propose to conquer them?
Knowledge about the target audience is also very important and is an essential part of a successful instructional designing. Instructional designers always keep their target audience in mind while developing the content matter. In order to be successful in your career as an instructional designer, you need to keep the following aspects in mind:
-Types of students who can opt for a particular course
-The educational qualification of the students
-The knowledge they would have on the subject
-Attitudes of students towards the course content
-Prior experience with the content
The next important step is the design and development of learning material. In this stage, instructional designers need to design course material for specific learning outcomes, defining the main scope of the project.
Instructional designers formulate topics of information required by students and work towards bringing out a performance-based learning outcome. Instructional designers define learning objectives and specify relevant skills that need specialization.
