Acting Tips to Hone Your Craft
Acting Tips to Hone Your Craft
If you have been taking acting classes for a while, or have just entered the field, you probably have noticed by now that it's not as easy as it looks. People struggle everyday with their acting and so we thought it was time for us to add our voice and create a list of acting tips that might benefit some of our readers – acting tips which will help you fine tune your skills resulting in a better, overall performance.
Number 1 of Our Acting Tips: Do Your Research
When taking on any role, it's important that you not only really take the time to think about the character that you are playing but that you do research on that character. If you are playing a raped victim but have never been raped, how can you possibly tap into that frame of mind? If you are playing a brain surgeon, how can you know what it is like to carry the weight of that responsibility on your shoulders? Research, whether it's done through books or by talking to people who have intimate knowledge of these areas, is invaluable. Many famous actors do this deliberately and methodically to add to the essence of the characters that they play. Actors who do this superbly are Robert Downey Jr. and Dustin Hoffmann.
Number 2 of Our Acting Tips: Think, Think, Think
Some people have the notion that actors are lazy – that they get their scripts and just get up their and talk. That's actually what a host does, not an actor. A host just reads a script, not obliged to breathe life into it and make it real, or transcend the moment. As an actor, your job is to create something that touches people just by watching you. If you cannot think and figure out a way to bring life, vigor and feeling to the role you are playing, then you are in the wrong role. You must in some way connect with that role with your soul, and the ONLY path to gaining that connection is through your brain, so deep thinking is in order, and lots of it.
Number 3 of Our Acting Tips: Stay in the Moment
It is a beautiful thing when you are watching a play or a movie, and you become totally immersed in a scene so much so that you forget you are watching something that is rehearsed and not real life. For actors, there is a moment for some of the greats where they actually do feel totally engaged and immersed in the scene at hand. They become unconcerned with the cameras, the lights, the other people standing around and they are just engaged with their partner as if they are just one fluid piece of interactive art. This is how it should be when you are giving a great performance. If you can stay engaged, you will have taken a big step toward creating a wonderful moment in acting.
