Adopting A Mindset For Career Change
The thought of making a career change can be scary. We have the tendency to develop a level of comfort within the different institutions in our lives. As a result, we can become complacent and "change" can become a foreign concept.
We have to begin to prepare for a career change. One of the first ways we do so is mentally. This means getting the mind ready for the change.
Adopting a Mindset for Change
Once we've mentally considered the change, a sound decision is then made or a thought is thoroughly considered. After that, we begin the task of searching for ways to make it happen. Adopting a mindset for change means that we've come to terms with the decision that we've considered. It means that we're preparing to move into action. It means that we now are certain that making a career change is the path we're going to take.
Certainty is a must because changing careers involves halting the current career path and beginning another. For a moment, it moves us from stability to instability, from safe to unsafe, and from faith to fear. It forces us to adopt different methods, behaviors, attitudes and even lifestyles. That, within itself, is enough to make any of us resist change.
After mental preparation is done, the steps following come with much more ease. The steps and factors that will be involved help prepare for success.
Factors for Career Change
Preparing for a career change forces us to look in a few directions. Some definite factors that must be considered are things like:
1) Personal & professional benefits
2) Amount of income to pursue
3) Reality of long term benefits/goal
These factors are almost always the foundational issues that are assessed to help make decisions when a change of career is on the horizon. Because they will have both an immediate and long term impact, they become important for success.
Consider the Factors
Personal and professional benefits are generally the first factors that one considers before making a career change. They must be, for they will have a direct affect on the involved party. Ask questions like: What will I get out of this? How can I use it to advance my personal life or career?
Assessing the amount of income that will be useful is usually a close second when making a change. You'll need to know how much work will need to be done to garner the best amount of money, and how much money will be enough.
Finally, thinking long term-- will it be worth the time and effort? Is this a career with lasting benefits? If so, how long?
Ask these questions and watch your decision begin to take form and your career change become more visible.
