Babysitting Classes – How to Find the Right One for You

Posted: Jan 06, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

So you've decided to start babysitting, or maybe you've been babysitting for a while and want to turn your hobby into a business. Whether you are new or experienced, babysitting classes are a good investment. How can you find the ones that are right for you? There may be more options than you think and choosing between them can be difficult!

First, consider the following:

  • Does the class offer 1 on 1 help? If you have specific questions, will you be able to get the answers you need?
  • When are the classes offered? Do they conflict with your other activities? How will you get to the classes? How long will the classes take?
  • How much do the classes cost?
  • Is there support after the classes have ended?
  • What is the experience of the person or people teaching the classes?
  • How much information is provided? Do the classes only cover first aid and emergencies? Does it also include information on handling difficult children or how to support the parents? Does it cover running a business?

Second, review your options.

Your local continuing education department, department of recreation or even your local Red Cross chapter may provide babysitting classes. Many of these classes are taken over a period of 6 to 8 weeks and typically range in price from $40 to $80 depending on your location. These are relatively expensive options and require a commitment to being in the class until the series of classes are complete. Typically they end with an exam, and there may be an extra charge for re-testing if you do not pass the exam the first time.

Another option is to take classes online. SitterSource offers information on certified babysitting classes you can take online for less than $18. Their online courses work around your schedule, offer personal attention with instructors available online or by phone. The fee includes access to all their materials, including an online encyclopedia of articles, for a full year.

Before selecting babysitting classes, do your research. Speak to the instructors of various programs and ask questions. Speak to your friends or neighbors who have taken babysitting classes. Consider your options carefully and select the classes that fit your needs!
