Building Technician

Building technicians bridge the gap between management and hands on workers on construction projects.  They also assist other professionals involved in projects such as managers, surveyors and engineers.

At the planning stage they will prepare designs and plans for surveyors and construction professionals.  They will also deal with any changes to previous designs.

On the financial side, they are tasked with listing each and every part or item required for a project, everything from equipment to the costs of employing workers and buying in materials.  Their analysis and computations are aimed at devising a total costing that will both succeed in getting the contract and ensuring the work returns a profits.

When purchasing materials they ensure the price and quality of items brought in.  They achieve this by using the project designs as a basis for negotiation with suppliers, contractors and sub contractors.

They will be required to be on site to inspect all newly delivered equipment and materials.

Their other usual activities include:

l  Carrying out the necessary preparation of a site ready for work.

l  Overseeing all workers on site.

l  Ensuring work is completed on time.

l  Being responsible for health and safety.

l  Serving as engineers on site.

l  Being present at all site and work related meetings.

l  Liaising with architects, managers, skilled workers, clients and inspectors.

Building technicians are usually employed by public and private organisations.  They work both in offices and on site, so will need to be mobile.  When outdoors, they will be exposed to all weathers and conditions, and must wear all necessary safety clothing and footwear when on site.

New recruits, qualified with a minimum of good GSCE grades in maths and science, can start as an apprentice building technician and progress through training and on the job experience.

Building technicians usually work around 40 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, but extra hours can be required to meet project deadlines.

Building technicians' salaries usually start around £14000 to £15000 per year.

Vacancies are advertised in specialist journals like Construction Manager, Jobcentre Plus offices, newspapers and websites.
