To achieve careers in naturopathy, aspiring candidates need to know essential aspects of the alternative healthcare field, and what education and training is necessary for the profession.

Legislation

It is critical that individuals determine what their respective State guidelines in relation to careers in naturopathy are. In addition to the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, there are 14 States in the U.S. that regulate licensure for this natural medicine. However, if you reside in the States of South Carolina or Tennessee, the practice is prohibited. In Canada, four Provinces have established licensure guidelines.

Naturopathic Medicine Credentials

Unique professional prospects await those who have completed course requirements to achieve careers in naturopathy. But potential students should note that becoming a licensed naturopathic physician (N.D.) requires commitment and an in-depth education through a graduate-level naturopathic medicine college or school.

Upon meeting all academic prerequisites, candidates who want to achieve careers in naturopathy can do so by applying to one of a number of naturopathic medical schools in the United States or in Canada. Once accepted, be prepared to gain an all-inclusive education in the healing arts and crucial health sciences. Some of the various studies and practical training that students gain involve acupuncture and Oriental medicine, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, counseling, homeopathy, psychology, and more. Furthermore, those who desire careers in naturopathy must be prepared to take professional board exams to gain licensure and/or certification.

Professional Outlook

Some of the many lucrative opportunities that careers in naturopathy offer candidates include positions as primary care physicians, researchers, natural health pharmacists, holistic instructors, public healthcare educators, and medical consultants, among others.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in learning more about these or other wellness occupations, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, naturopathy, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore careers in naturopathy near you.
