Coaching Career - How Gerry Faust Realized His Dream

Everyone has a dream they want to follow, something they want to achieve in their lifetime. However, it is not often that we find someone who has been able to live his or her life according to their dream. But then we do come up against someone now and then who is actually living their dream – Gerry Fausts is one of those few individuals fortunate enough to be able to realize his dream of a lifetime. He wanted to be a football coach.

Though Gerry Fausts started out as a football coach at the University of Notre Dame in the year 1981 and continued to work there till the mid 80s this is not the way Gerry began his coaching career as a foot ball coach. Gerry's football career started out as a quarterback on the football team of the University of Dayton, and he was a very successful quarterback at that. That is when his talents as a footballer began to be recognized.

The apt leadership of the Notre Dame University football coach Huge Devore that gave him an insight to the actual requirements of the game. Gerry initially wanted to attend the University of Notre Dame but ended up attending the University of Dayton because he received a partial scholarship for his college.

Gerry Fausts' coaching career actually started when he took up the offer to coach the football team at Moller High School in Cincinnati. Gerry dedicated a lot of time and effort developing the perfect football program for the institution and built a football program for the team from scratch. He went on to accomplish 7 unbeaten seasons with 4 national prep titles, 5 Ohio State titles and a record of 174-17-2. Gerry started to be recognized as a foot ball guru.

People in the country started turning to Gerry to coach them in football because by now Gerry was a renowned football coach. Notre Dame was the first to act when they realized Gerry was in great demand and hired his as their foot ball coach. Gerry joined Notre Dame along with some of his star players from Moeller. Though Notre Dame was voted number 1 at first things began to go down hill and Gerry knew his coaching career would not be the same as it was in the past.

No one knows exactly why Fausts' coaching and career took a beating at the time but one thing was sure his foot ball team had started loosing match after match. Each season was worse than the last with his team failed to win more than 7 matches in one season. Because of this debacle the football fans of Notre Dame wanted Gerry's coaching career to be ended immediately and picketed him with placards that said "Oust Faust" but despite this Faust completed his 5 year contract with Notre Dame.

It is believed that Faust never took advice, became too friendly with the players and so was subject to a lot of contempt from the team and he also never had much collegiate experience. Faust's highlight of his career was his appearance in the Aloha Bowl in 1984 and this is what brought him a lot of fame. When Foust left Notre Dame the accepted a coaching position at the University of Akron. Though his career as a football coach never improved much Faust still loves the game and has become a fund raiser for the institution where he continues to promote the game of football.
