When it comes to your first job, you don’t want to leave any stone unturned to ensure that you are successful in your job hunt. Whether it is about interview tips or support in writing a resume, freshers want to lap up all advice that will prove useful to them. Since there is no previous job experience to boast about, writing a resume for the first job could be tricky. And all freshers go through this dilemma while looking for their first job. They struggle to come up with a resume that will attract the eye of the recruiter and get them their first job.
Creating your first resume for your first job need not be an intimidating task. You need to follow a few steps and keep your focus in mind to come up with a winning resume. Before starting to write the resume, clearly understand the goal of your resume and keep it in focus throughout. It is not your life history document. Just write it with the thought that whether this resume can enthuse the recruiter or not. Will the resume make him interested in you further or not? Just a resume cannot get you a job but it can earn you interview appointments from where your own talent and personality will get you the job. However, no amount of good personality and skill swill get you an interview call in the first place if your resume doesn’t highlight them well.
On reading the resume, the first thing that comes to the mind of the recruiter is whether this candidate is suitable for he job vacancy or not. Whether he will be able to add any value to the company or not. If your first resume can answer these questions in the affirmative, your interview call for the first job is guaranteed. The recruiter knows that you are a fresher so he would not expect to read about any previous experience on the resume but he would want your resume to communicate your strengths clearly. It’s only after he is convinced about your strengths that he will want to call you for an interview.
The first thing to do while writing a resume is to research about the job posting. To be able to demonstrate the relevant skills, you first need to know what the recruiter is looking for. Thus, research about the job postings. If you know some industry seniors, talk to them about the requirements for such a job. Take their inputs and incorporate them in the resume that you prepare. In the job posting too, spot the keywords and include them in your resume. By reading the job posting and the job description carefully, you will get a fair idea of what the recruiter is looking for. Also, read as much as you can about the industry that you wish to join. Getting comprehensive knowledge about the industry of your choice will help you understand the requirements of the industry and highlight those points on your resume.
While writing your first resume, don’t worry about not being able to write about any prior work experience. If you analyse your background carefully, you will come up with a lot of positive points and relevant skills and strengths to talk about. You should first prepare a rough draft about your personality characteristics and all that is good about you. You can talk to your friends and family to help you identify your strong points. Then, make a note about your hard skills that include technical and computer skills. These are very important to highlight in your resume. If during your college or school, you have undertaken projects that might be relevant to the freshers job that you have applied for, don’t forget to mention it lucidly in the resume. Then, write about your educational accomplishments, if any. If you have been an average student, don’t give much space to your percentage and all. Write about the skills that you gathered during internships or any summer jobs. Also, do mention about your other awards, recognition and participation in events during your educational journey. If you helped organize a college function or event, you can use it to highlight your leadership and team playing skills, If you are good at sports, it can show your enterprising and hard-working nature. With all this, prepare the final draft of your resume.
Other general things about writing a good resume are that it should be printed in a clear and not a fancy font on a regular size paper. It should have clear sub-heads. Make sure you get it proof-read for any spelling or grammatical mistakes. Following all these tips, you will be ready for a resume that will win you many interview calls for your first job.
