Posted: Jan 05, 2011 |

Are you fascinated by the way a human heart works? If yes, then perhaps you should opt for EKG Technician Training and become a Technician.

Background

EKG is an acronym for Electrocardiographic. A technician working in this field will be in charge of performing cardiovascular tests on patients by using electrical impulses and transmitting them to a patient's heart. Working as an EKG Technician is a promising career with a bright future ahead. Currently, an EKG Technician is expected to work 40 hours a week and earn an average income of $60,000 a year.

The Training

In order to become an Electrocardiographic Technician, you must receive the following Technician Training required for every professional in this field.

  • First you must complete high school or a GED diploma, followed by an associate's degree. This normally lasts for two years. However, during your high school years, you must concentrate on learning and improving your knowledge of science and mathematics as both subjects will help you succeed in this field.
  • Next you must try to earn your certification. This usually takes a period of one year. On the other hand, if you are switching careers within the medical field, you can also benefit from on-job training. Training sessions of this nature usually last for about a month or two. However, one of the most crucial parts of the training is choosing your specialization. You can select invasive cardiology, vascular technology or even echo-cardiography and then pursue your Training accordingly.
  • Next, you are also required to get certified from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).This is one of the most crucial elements of the Training as it allows you to get global recognition within this line of work.
  • You can also opt for a continuing education examination which leads up to the Nationally Registered title of Certified EKG Technician (NRCEKG) exam. This test is offered through the NAAHP; it is normally taken to improve the job prospects of an EKG Technician or to increase his or her salary.

Work Experience

Gaining sufficient work experience is another major element of EKG Technician Training. During your course of study, you must try to avail as much work experience in the practical field as possible. Internships or simply observing a professional is another essential part of the Training as that will give you a deeper insight into this line of work and guarantee you of a lucrative career ahead.
