2007 sees graduate starting salaries make rises in certain areas with best-paying employers being those for investment banking. Graduates entering investment banking jobs can command entry salaries of £36,000 with legal firms and business consultancies following close behind. By contrast, the lowest graduate starting salaries occur in retail and transport jobs, which often pay around £20,000.

Critical skills for investment banking jobs include:

  • analytical ability

  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • high levels of drive and excellence

Investment banking is unique in the diversity, intellectual challenge, productivity, career opportunity, breadth and variety of teamwork and analytical content that it presents to graduates.

Hours can vary with some jobs involving long days starting at around 7am and some roles finish late. That said, work in this area is dynamic and innovative – giving you plenty of challenges and scope in your career.
