The Construction Job is a specialist job board carrying thousands of construction jobs from the UK and Europe. These jobs include construction engineer jobs, construction manager jobs and general construction career opportunities.
A promotion to a construction manager position needs a little preparation. Here are some things you need to take into consideration when you move.
Firstly, relationships. Make sure that you maintain the positive and strong relationships you have already built in the company and nurture these so you continue to effectively work with them. At the same time, you need to build new relationships and ensure you gain respect from individuals you will be working with. Get to know the staff individually and understand their current responsibilities.
Leave your current construction employment smoothly ensuring all outstanding tasks are performed properly and passed over. This will help your reputation within the firm.
Do not start changing the culture of the organisation as soon as you start your job – keep the structure and procedures constant until you have found your feet and settled in.
Provide feedback to your staff regularly as this helps them grow as well as increasing their respect for you.
Lead by example to help gain respect from the employees.
Try not to get involved in any office politics as you could end up siding with people you may end up not wanting to.
Make sure you treat all staff equally and fairly so no one feels they are being unfairly treated. Do not get into this habit or you will quickly loose respect.
Trust your staff at the beginning and this will affect each person positively.
At the end of the day, make sure you do not work too many extra hours and look after your own well-being without getting too stressed. Hopefully, this advice will help you become a good construction manager and boost the construction career you are hoping for.
