How Much Money Can I Save Teaching English in Taiwan

Teaching English in Taiwan can be a great way to save money. Just how much you save really depends on the life style you want to live. I've seen people not save anything and others manage to save up enough to pay off their university debts and much more. You can save money teaching in Taiwan if you really want to and you don't have to live like a hermit.

The average pay for an English teacher in Taiwan varies from about $18 - $20 USD per hour. This can be higher or lower depending on your qualifications and where you end up working. For many people this is already more than they may earn in their current job but for some it is the same. You can really save money in Taiwan because rent is much lower than most other developed countries. Apartments from two to 4 bedroom range from $250 to $350 USD per month. Obviously if you share with someone else you could pay anywhere from $100 - $150 USD per month.

Most teachers work approx 20 hours a week. It doesn't sound like much but if you don't mind eating local food you can save even more. Western or foreign food usually costs about the same or even more than it does back home. Feel like going to pizza hut? Two large pizzas can cost you $18 - $20 USD. If you want to save on your food, eat local foods and avoid anything that is imported or is marketed as being "foreign". You can get relatively good lunches for around $2 - $3 USD which has plenty of rice, meat and vegetables.

Teaching English in Taiwan is an easy to save money in Taiwan if you are happy to live a normal life and avoid spending up big going out partying every night. Rent is cheap and it is much cheaper to eat out (if you don't mind Chinese/local food) than it costs back home.
