So you think you have what it takes to become a successful model? You must be prepared for stressful, exhausting hard work, if you don't mind the sound of that, then please read on.
Out of all the modelling categories, fashion modelling is the most prestigious and hardest to get into. Fashion modelling has very harsh standards which include, age, weight, height and measurements.
Something which has has also caused a lot of controversy lately is the "size zero" requirements put on models. This requires them to have zero body fat, this puts a lot of pressure on models.
At the beginning of their career, most models do not earn very much money from magazine editorial projects. This means that it takes fashion models several years to build a credible portfolio, which is needed to get high paying projects.
There arn't many fashion models who make it to the top of the game, this is due to the high pressure conditions of the job, and also the great number of competition. Drugs is also a big problem within the fashion modelling industry, and is subject to a lot of media attention.
Commercial modelling is a much better choice, as it allows models the freedom from long tours, healthier living and it is also less competitive.
"There is simply more money in commercial print. You can make $3000 a day, says Frank Marsi, commercial photographer, You can also work much longer, there are commercial models in their late thirties."
In order to become a commercial model, you will first need to create a composite card. This will need around 5 - 8 pictures of yourself looking pretty and natural. Use a local established photographer to create these. You can then show modelling agencies your photos.
There is also the fitness modelling industry, where by models are used to promote such products as weight lifting, gym equipment, sports clothing and protein shakes. Fitness models must work out often, and keep a very defined muscular look. If you are interested in this category, you should start your career by taking part in fitness conventions and conests.
Glamour modelling is a lot more sexually orientated, therefor you must be willing to take your clothes off. You have to be at least 18 to model in the glkamour modelling scene. When deciding which photographer to use for your portfolio, you should get references of their work and samples, as safety is of utmost importance.
Whichever category you decide to go into, remember that modelling can be extremely fun and exciting. But apart from physical attributes, you also need a good personality, confidence and punctuality.
