How To Make A Career Change

Posted: Mar 14, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

The current job crisis has many seeking a career change. The desire to travel outside of what's comfortable, the need to find stability and the urge to maintain a quality standard of living has us searching for alternatives to what we know. A change can come in the form of a better job, a business investment, or moving to a different arena altogether where actual "work" is not required, but instead individuals network and meet with constituents, consumers or clients.

Any degree of career change can leave one uneasy. Change isn't always easy or welcomed. Sometimes it's difficult and non-inviting. However, with a steady plan and proper preparation, it can be done fairly painlessly.

How to Make a Career Change

There is a process one puts in motion when a career change is imminent. It's not anything standard, however, it will help when change becomes evident.

1)    Slowly prepare your mind for the reality

2)    Determine a date for transition

3)    Carefully slow down current work processes

4)    Align your clients or customers for change

5)    Begin preparation for new business

6)    Network between the two; with focus on the more current

Once these steps are followed, with a few additions, change should be simple. Don't be afraid to let interested parties know what you're doing. You could be surprised at their interest or assistance. Be sure about your position. If you're sure, others will be too.

Moving Toward Success

Move ahead with the mindset that you're going to succeed. Keep in mind that small failures could be part of the process. Pay attention to others who are doing what you're doing. Listen to their testimonies, but try to stay ahead of the game. Make sure you have enough overhead to do so. Always keep an emergency stash of funds; one for business and one for personal is a good idea. That way if anything unplanned happens, you'll be prepared.

Talk to people who could be of assistance to you. Keep them close. Try to stay away from family and friends though; with a few exceptions, their input should be minimal. They might feel a sense of entitlement and you don't want to have to deal with that as you move on. Maintain positive relationships and keep a positive attitude, focusing on things that work is extremely helpful.

Practical Preparation

A determined mind and practical preparation leads to success. Practical preparation simply means that you've laid out the reality of how the change will occur. And, while change is not guaranteed for success, it is possible. Part of success begins with a thought. You must know that you are successful.

When you know it, forging ahead into a career change can be one of the best choices you make.
