If you are an actor, you know that in your profession that you need to take excellent care of your body and keep it in tiptop shape! You might think that this is simply because actors and anyone in Hollywood is beautiful and in great shape, this is not the case. It is because, with a body that is physically fit, you will have the ability to play many different characters based on your physical capabilities.
For you, this means one thing. To be the best actor that you can possibly be, you have to be as fit at you can possibly be. Just in case you are misinterpreting the definition fit doesn't mean thin. Fit means that you are flexible, strong, and have a high level of stamina for the job that you are pursuing.
I mentioned flexibility for a good reason. One of the most overlooked areas of fitness today is the ability to be flexible. Yoga has really emphasized how much flexibility training can contribute to ones overall fitness levels. You may not realize this, but being flexible is good for your body in every way and makes your body much less prone to injury. It also makes your body stronger to withstand stress.
For many individuals this may sound crazy, but most of the time, acting on a set means you will be spending a very long day with a lot of repetitive motion. This is especially hard on ones body; even the healthiest bodies take a lot of abuse during an acting career. This is why it is so important to take care of you. Because actors have to worry about so many different things when it comes to their career, physical fitness is often forgotten about. This is a very important one to add to your list of to-dos.
Now that you understand how important flexibility is in an actor's career, you need to understand how important stamina is for your career as well. Those long days that I referred to, require a great deal of cardiovascular fitness on your part. In no way do I believe that more out of shape individuals can't act, but after they complete a long twelve or thirteen hour shoot, they are probably not giving their all on the set. If you were given the choice between this actor that I just described, or the actor how has stamina and gives 120% at the end of the day, which would you cast to be in your production?
Just keep these things in mind and you will be setting yourself apart from your competition by light years.
