Pursuing a career in science with the intention of contributing to one of the concerns of the society might seem like a noble cause. The latter is specifically evident in areas related to environmental protection. It might seem that environment protection is everyone's concern in the last decade, and thus, a career in environment protection can be seen promising in terms of long term perspectives. The main concern of environmental scientists is analyzing problems and coming with solutions. In that regard, this article provides an overview of one of the most important scientific careers in the last decades, which is environmental scientist.

Overview

The main requirements for environmental scientists can be seen in a degree, preferably graduate, in an environmental or related natural science. The job requires knowledge in disciplines such as environmental protection, hydrology, geography, chemistry, and others. Math and computer skills can be also important in such careers. Such careers usually imply working on the field as well as in laboratories, where places of work include governmental organizations and companies which sphere of operations are directly connected to the environment, e.g. oil companies and companies manufacturing chemical products. The aforementioned examples are not inclusive. At the current time, there is a global emphasis on environment protection, which implies a growth of the number of jobs for environmental scientists.

Future Outlook

Unfortunately, it can be assumed that the problems of the environment are not likely to disappear in the near future. There are initiatives toward solving environmental problems, but at the same time, the pace at which these initiatives are implemented implies that environmental problems will persist. In that regard, it can be assumed that the demand for environmental scientists is likely to increase, which makes such scientific careers a promising opportunity to pursue.
