Jobs For Graduates - Preparing For Your Dream Job

Posted: Jan 20, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Have you freshly graduated from college with excitement headed for the graduates-only job market section only to find yourself in the role Ryden Malby from the movie Post Grad? For those who haven't watched the film yet, it is about a girl who thought she had her future all worked until she steps out of college only to discover that "real" life operates from a totally unscripted set of rules.

Here are five tips to help you get to the job you desire:

Take responsibility for your life
Yes, you are a graduate but you still have to roll up your sleeves if you want your dream job. A sense of entitlement will just become a liability. You are 100% responsible for how you choose to feel about your present Mcjob. Know you are working for yourself and treat employment as a means towards your goal. It will give you a feeling of control and a positive attitude which are important in making rational decisions about your next course of action, whether it is going for interviews or getting out of the pits

Work harder at your job than you think is fair
Your boss at work may be a pain or the job a dead end. Still, you need to be prepared for bigger things. When you acquire the right ethic you become noticeable to everyone including customers who may be potential employers. You also grow in confidence and become indispensable to the company, making it easier to negotiate for better terms.

Choose one occupation to go for
Specialists get paid a whole lot more than jacks of all trade. You need to be a master of something. Pay should not be the only reason for jumping from one job to another. The moves should be strategic so that your resume looks good for the industry you wish to work in. For example, to get where he is, did you know that Simon Cowell offered to work for free with a producer in order to learn the ropes?

Learn from your work colleagues
Just because you graduated with good grades does not mean you should be a know-it-all. You can never stop learning. It is a fact that classroom theory rarely matches practice. Do not start alienating people at work with your attitude. Instead, take your first few months mingling, observing and asking questions. This does not mean you are surrendering your values. It just enriches your experiences to enable you make better decisions or suggest practical in a better position to question or make changes later on.

Be flexible
It sounds Darwinian but it is the only way to grow. If the job pays you very little, save, scrape until you are able to crawl out of your situation. You owe it to yourself to live a stable future and it is your job, no one else's to make lemonade out of it. A place I would recommend to start your journey towards independence is www.stuffhuting.com.
