Jobs in The Media

Getting into a career in radio is often seen as a stepping stone to the more profitable world of television but remaining within the industry can lead to profitable and artistically fulfilling roles that often offer relatively high job security. Traditionally many radio workers would start off at local radio stations and work their way up to national stations but the rise of Internet-based and digital radio stations has seen many radio workers begin their career at relatively new stations.

A Radio Presenter is somebody who presents a radio show. Radio show presenters frequently work on light entertainment shows where they will be required to interview various studio guests, discuss current affairs, play music and introduce pre-recorded segments of the show and interact with colleagues who will read out the news, weather and traffic reports. Radio presenters must have the ability to keep an audience's attention at all times and they may also be required to field phone-in sections where members of the public can ring the show to voice their opinion on a subject or to enter a competition such as a quiz or raffle. Radio presenters must speak clearly and must be able to form a bond with their listeners and studio guests. An in-depth knowledge of current events is needed for general entertainment shows whereas shows that cater to a niche or special interest audience (E.G. a show devoted to 1960's jazz records) will require the presenter to have a thorough knowledge of the show's focus subject.

A Researcher can work in television or radio. Their job is to spend time researching the focus of an upcoming show so that a presenter has a variety of facts he or she can tell an audience during a programme or so that the presenter can ask a studio guest pertinent questions about their past career or personal life. Researchers can also occasionally appear on a show themselves to discuss their findings with the show's presenter and/or studio guests. Researchers tend to form a strong bond with colleagues such as presenters and directors and will often follow their colleagues to new shows or channels if a strong working bond exists between them.
